The USA is more likely to breakup into 5 separate regions running N to S along the Mountains and the Mississippi. The events will probably look a lot like the breakup of the USSR, and with the same results. The regions that come up with some of the nuclear weapons that are stored in them will leave relatively peacefully. Any region without nukes will be conquered by one that has them. And, the whole world will probably plunge into a new dark ages punctuated with the occasional nuclear strike, leading to an end to large cities, overpopulation and localized targets.
Unfortunately, this is looking more likely all the time.
